BUYING GUIDE[01]

Compost blend for beds, gardens and tired lawns

Aged compost cut with screened topsoil — rich enough to feed a vegetable bed, mild enough that it will not burn a young root.

Why blended, not straight compost

Pure compost is intense. Fill a raised bed with it and the material will slump heavily over the first season, hold too much water and can scorch seedlings. Blending it with screened topsoil gives structure, moderates the nutrient load and holds volume.

Our blend is aged, not fresh. Fresh compost is still consuming nitrogen as it breaks down and will pull it out of the soil away from your plants.

Raised beds and vegetable gardens

Fill raised beds with the blend straight and plant the same afternoon. A four by eight foot bed at twelve inches deep takes roughly one and a quarter cubic yards. Expect an inch or two of settlement in the first month and top up in spring.

Top-dressing a lawn

A half-inch top-dressing across an established lawn in early spring is one of the highest-return things you can do for turf in this climate. It feeds the soil biology, improves water retention through the summer and gradually levels minor undulations.

Core-aerate first if the ground is compacted, then broadcast and drag in. Never exceed one inch in a single application.

Mistakes we watch people make

  • !Filling beds with pure compost and watching them sink by a third.
  • !Applying more than an inch over live turf.
  • !Top-dressing in the heat of July rather than spring or fall.
  • !Skipping aeration on hard-packed ground, so the dressing just sits there.

Compost Blend questions

Is it safe for vegetables?

+

Yes. It is aged plant-based compost blended with screened topsoil, with no biosolids.

Does it smell?

+

Aged compost has a clean earthy smell. If a pile smells sour it is not finished, and we do not sell it.

How much for a raised bed?

+

Length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27. A 4 by 8 bed at 12 inches is about 1.2 cubic yards.
